The exhibition was held in Nizhny Novgorod
on
the 40th day
after the death of my mother
Valentina Belousova
in
the apartment where we lived with her.
It is assembled from
ready-made objects, artifacts of coexistence, photographs and drawings made by me during my mother's illness, an objectdoll, video and audio interviews of Valentina. The objects are located in a closet purchased in the year I was born. Each section of the wardrobe is dedicated to a specific subtheme of the mother-daughter relationship.
In every apartment of a person from the "sleeping district" there were such "wall" cabinets that collect and store household items familiar from their own past— film photographs, calendars, postcards, clothes, discount cards, a crystal set, certificates and insignia, medicines.
Apartment Exhibition
"Pominky"
art exhibition as a ritual
apartment in Nizhny Novgorod
2020
In my experience in the post-Soviet space, the existing forms of remembering a departed person are reduced to a joint meal. But everyone is well aware of the museum-apartments of the dead famous people, which store their belongings and recreate the interiors of their homes. A similar space of memory in an ordinary one-room apartment ofa nine-story building through me as a guideguide, makes it possible to live grief, letting go of
emotions, for the expression of which there was no place in the years of nihilism and spontaneous capitalism of the 90s. In addition to a way to remember a person close to me, this is also an occasion to talk through recognizable things about the past that has not yet passed away and the way of organizing the lives of people who came to the exhibition.
